  • Kolkata: The detective department of Kolkata Police busted an organised gang of touts operating within two of the city's major govt medical institutions.

    Cops on Friday night arrested two individuals—Sachin Raut and Golam Rasul—for allegedly extorting money from patients' families in exchange for hospital beds. Sachin of Dr Lalit Banerjee Road, who was employed as a temporary cleaning staff member at Kolkata Medical College Hospital, was caught on the hospital premises. Golam Rasul of Margram in Birbhum was detained at SSKM Hospital.

    After a complaint, detectives had conducted an undercover vigil at these hospitals, leading to the arrests. The investigation revealed that Sachin solicited a bribe of Rs 10,000 from a patient's family to secure a hospital bed. He had accepted an advance of Rs 5,000. But, this transaction was intercepted by detectives.Rasul was implicated in running a long-standing broker operation at SSKM Hospital. The rates, fixed by the broker ring, varies based on the type of hospital bed sought for.
