• Vancouver-Delhi flight lands in Kolkata after man falls ill mid-air

  • Kolkata: A Delhi-bound Air India flight from Vancouver, Canada made an emergency landing at Kolkata airport on Friday after a passenger experienced chest pain and restlessness mid-air.

    The flyer, 70-year-old Dalbir Singh, subsequently died while being rushed to a hospital off VIP Road.

    The Boeing B 777-ER touched down around 9.15 pm after the skies were cleared to enable a priority landing. Singh, was deplaned and rushed to Charnock Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Police informed the deceased's family, who were en-route to Kolkata. The body was transferred to RG Kar Medical College for postmortem examination.

    The flight departed for Delhi at 10.10 pm with the remaining 176 passengers.

    This was the second instance of a medical emergency on this route.

    On June 26, the Vancouver flight had returned to Kolkata while en-route to Delhi after making a refuelling halt when a passenger fell ill on board.

    Doctors said tarvelling in ultra-long haul flight of over 15.5-16 hours can lead to deep vein thrombosis.
