• After ‘Montha’, cyclone ‘Senyar’ brewing in Bay of Bengal

  • The weather system over the Strait of Malacca and the adjoining South Andaman Sea is expected to move west-northwest and intensify into a depression by November 24. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), it is likely to strengthen further into a cyclonic storm, which will be called ‘Senyar’ once it intensifies to the level, over the southeast Bay of Bengal in the next couple of days.

The IMD has issued heavy rainfall alerts for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, along with warnings of squally winds reaching 50-60 kmph and gusting to 70 kmph from the evening of November 25. Wind speeds may increase over the southeast Bay from the next morning as the system intensifies further.

A separate low-pressure area is also coming to form over the Comorin region, the southwest Bay of Bengal, and Sri Lanka around November 25, as per the weather office. Heavy to very heavy rain is expected over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Kerala on November 25.

‘Senyar’ will be the second cyclone to form in the Bay of Bengal during the post-monsoon season this year. The earlier—Montha—made landfall near Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh on October 28 as a severe cyclonic storm.

Cyclones during October and November are typical for the Bay of Bengal, where warm sea surface temperatures, favourable wind patterns, and atmospheric instability support the development of strong storm systems during these months. ‘Senyar’ will be the second cyclone to develop in the Bay of Bengal in the post-monsoon season. So far, the weather office has not identified the path and direction of the cyclone.
