• Doc helps woman give birth on toto in Malda

  • Malda: The usually bustling K J Sanyal Road in English Bazar went unusually quiet for some time on Sunday after an e-rickshaw (toto) covered in clothes stopped in the middle of the road. A doctor was seen rushing to the toto. And minutes later, a newborn was heard crying, surprising onlookers.

Puja Rajbanshi, an English Bazar resident in the advanced stage of her first pregnancy, was scheduled to meet her gynaecologist Debchandan Roy for a scheduled check-up. So her husband, Bijoy, hired a toto to take her to the doctor's chamber.

But before Puja could reach the doctor, she felt severe pain. Bijoy noticed she was bleeding. He stopped the toto and called the doctor.

The doctor assessed the situation and hurried to the toto to meet his patient in distress. Locals in the area where the toto had stopped rushed in to help build a makeshift cover. And Dr. Roy performed an emergency delivery on the spot — a baby girl was born.

The doctor said, "The baby was born at least a month early. There was no time to reach a hospital, so the delivery had to happen on the road."

Puja and her baby were later taken to a hospital. Both mother and child are said to be in good health. Bijoy said, "The doctor was a saviour. He saved my wife and baby in a difficult situation."
