• Cinematographer kills self over debt
    Times of India | 24 November 2025
  • Kolkata: A 42-year-old cinematographer, Soumyadeepta Guin, was found hanging in his Kasba flat on Saturday night, with a handwritten note pointing to prolonged financial distress and lack of steady work, police said.

Officers broke down the door of his Bosepukur apartment after neighbours complained of a foul smell.

Police said Guin lived alone and the note indicated he was struggling with debts and was not getting assignments for months, leading to depression. His body was sent for post-mortem.

News of his death has shocked the Tollywood film industry, where Guin — popularly known as Vicky — worked for years with several leading directors. He recently served as cinematographer in Raja Chanda's ‘Halum' and ‘Police', and collaborated with cinematographer-director Premendu Bikash Chaki. The Cinematographers' Guild said it will extend financial support to Guin's family.
