Kolaghat: A Kolkata resident, Surama Hazra (45), who was travelling on Dhauli Express with her husband on Sunday morning, was severely injured as she fought off two men attempting to snatch her gold chain and bag. The snatchers tried to shove Surama off the compartment but she held onto the handrails until she was rescued.
Though she survived the attack, her arm was severely wounded. Surama was first taken to the Kharagpur railway hospital and later shifted to a private hospital in Kolkata.
The two attackers, who cops said were from Howrah, jumped off the train after the snatching bid and tried to flee but villagers from the area, where the train had halted, chased and caught them. They beat them up before handing them to police. Police said they would be produced in a Tamluk court on Monday.
RPF and GRP officers said the train was approaching Kolaghat station. Surama had just stepped out of the train washroom, when the attackers, waiting there, tried to snatch her chain and bag. But, police said, as Surama fought back, they tried to shove her off the train and themselves jumped off. Alerted by the woman's cries, a passenger pulled the chain, bringing the train to a halt. Some others ran to the door to find Surama hanging from the door. "Her arm was critically damaged as it got wedged in the door frame," said a source.
The train had stopped just beyond Bhogpur station, between Panskura and Mecheda. The villagers caught the feeling accused. Panskura GRP officer Ziaul Haque said a case was started at Panskura GRP station.
