• 3 schoolkids die as pool car falls into Howrah pond

  • Howrah: Three schoolchildren died when a car ferrying them lost control and fell into a pond at Bahira in Howrah's Uluberia on Monday afternoon. Two other children travelling in the same car were injured and are admitted in hospital. The deceased children were Ishika Mondal (7) from Bahira Daspara, Uluberia, Howrah, a student of class II; Souvik Das (11) from Bahira Daspara, Uluberia, Howrah, a class IV student and Areen Dey (6) from Bahira Roypara, a class I student. All were students of St Mary's Missionary School in Uluberia, said the SP, Howrah Rural, Subimal Pal.

    According to police and local sources, the accident happened around 3 pm on Monday. The car was returning with five students from a local school. Near Bahira village, the driver lost control while attempting to overtake a four-wheeler, causing the vehicle to plunge into the pond with the students. Locals rushed to the scene and informed the police. They initially started the rescue operation, and later divers were deployed. Later, five students were rescued and sent to a local hospital. Doctors declared three of them dead. The condition of rest of the two injured students is critical and they are undergoing treatment, said cops.

    The SP said the driver has been detained for questioning.
