  • Kolkata: Despite the Calcutta High Court verdict, the health department is yet to comply with the order placing anaesthesiologist Aniket Mahata at RG Kar Medical College as a senior resident. The Voice of Abhaya, Voice of Women, an organisation formed by medical professionals and civil society, marched to Swasthya Bhawan to protest against the health department's lack of response to the court judgment.

On Nov 6, the HC division bench passed its judgment that Mahata, a prominent face of the RG Kar protest, should be posted at RG Kar Medical College. This verdict was passed after the state challenged a similar verdict passed by a single bench. On Tuesday, Mahata's lawyer filed a contempt of court petition.

"I submitted the copy of the verdict to the offices, including that of the principal health secretary, DME, and DHS. I am yet to get any response," Mahata said.

"It has been over 6 months since Mahata completed his PG. He is suffering because he is out of touch with patients and not receiving any stipend. He is being victimised just because he was a leading figure in the junior doctors' movement against the RG Kar rape-murder horror," said physician Biplab Chandra of Voice of Abhaya, Voice of Women.

The protesters also alleged that cops prevented them from entering Swasthya Bhawan.
