Kolkata: In a rise of cybercrime involving fake life certificate updates, senior citizens are being targeted by fraudsters. After Bidhannagar Police, Kolkata Police has reported multiple cases where pensioners have fallen victim to such scams.
Dulal Halder, a 62-year-old resident of Kadapara, is among the latest victims. On Oct 28, he received a call purportedly from his bank, instructing him to update his life certificate. During the call, the fraudsters gained control of his phone and siphoned Rs 5 lakh. Similarly, a senior citizen in Joka claimed to have lost Rs 5.5 lakh.
The police have identified a pattern in these scams, where criminals pose as bank officials and request sensitive information under the guise of updating life certificates. Victims are then asked to share their OTP, which the fraudsters use to siphon off funds.
