‘Acting like TMC militia’: In letter to CEC, Suvendu questions Bengal police officers’ neutrality

Kolkata: Three police officers in Bengal were acting as Trinamool's ‘private militia', alleged leader of the opposition in Bengal assembly Suvendu Adhikari in an email to chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on Tuesday. Adhikari also raised questions about the neutrality of the state police forces. The BJP neta attached videos of the officers' speeches with his complaint.
Adhikari urged the CEC not to involve anyone associated with the Police Welfare Committee in any election-related work in the upcoming assembly elections. Referring to a state-level conference for woman police officers organized in Digha by the Police Welfare Committee, Adhikari targeted a Kolkata Police DCP, an inspector and a sub-inspector. Bengal BJP sources said that the complaint letter also mentioned the "role" of an SP in south Bengal.
Saying that the Police Welfare Committee should not engage in "political discussions", Adhikari said: "However, from the platform of this organisation, police officers are instructing personnel to work towards maintaining Mamata Banerjee's govt. We can assume that the model code of conduct will be in effect from Feb. From then until the completion of the elections, we have asked the commission to ensure that no one associated with the West Bengal Police Welfare Committee is directly or indirectly involved in election work."
"The central forces will not be able to handle everything. Some tasks must be performed by the police. The Election Commission should assess whether these tasks will be handled by bringing in police from other states or through some other arrangement," Adhikari said.
"Trinamool has lost in faith in people and resorting to such pressure tactics. It is the same in the case of BLOs who are being intimidated. People of Bengal uprooted CPM and brought TMC to office. We have faith in their judgment," said Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya.
