• Howrah pool car had no fitness cert, driver had health issues

  • Howrah: The death of three schoolchildren in Uluberia on Monday has triggered widespread outrage after investigators confirmed that the pool car involved in the crash was running without a fitness certificate, had defective brakes, re-soled worn-out tyres, and an expired insurance policy—yet was still transporting students daily to Mother Merina Mission School.

Owner-driver Shrimanata Bag, who was ferrying seven pupils that afternoon, also suffered from serious heart and neurological ailments, raising further concerns about his ability to react during emergencies. Doctors at Uluberia Medical College and Hospital found that he underwent cardiac stenting a few months ago and continued to face neurological complications, police said.

The accident occurred after Bag dropped two children in Bahira and attempted a sharp left turn to avoid another vehicle. The pool car skidded and plunged into a pond, killing three children aged 6, 7, and 11. Two others escaped by smashing the windows; both are now undergoing treatment at Uluberia Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay Medical College & Hospital.

Forensic experts who examined the vehicle on Tuesday confirmed multiple mechanical failures that should have barred the car from being on the road. Police have booked Bag for rash driving, causing death by negligence, and violations of the Motor Vehicles Act. Howrah Rural Police have also questioned the school authorities on why an "unfit" vehicle was allowed to ferry students. Howrah SP Subimal Pal said Bag's health condition alone made him unfit to drive a vehicle carrying children.

The transport department has reiterated compulsory compliance with pool car guidelines. Howrah authorities have launched a special drive to inspect all pool cars operating in the district. The Poolcar Owners' Welfare Association also announced tightened protocols.
