A bunch of protests and marches in Kolkata is likely to cause a major traffic disruption today afternoon, causing inconvenience to commuters heading from south to north Kolkata or to Howrah. Two major demonstrations are scheduled to take place in the Esplanade area, one by Joutho Sangrami Mancha outside the State Chief Electoral Office and the other by Sanjukta Kishan Morcha. The farmers will be protesting against the BJP-led Centre’s policies. They are also protesting against the state government’s policy of installing smart metres in households in West Bengal.
The Sangrami Joutho Mancho – a state government’s employees organisation – on the other hand, will give deputation to the Chief Electoral Officer. Already, a section of Booth Level Officers (BLOs) is staging a protest there over “excessive workload” and poor net connectivity during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Electoral Rolls.
The Congress will celebrate the 76th anniversary of the Enactment of the Constitution on Wednesday, around Bidhan Bhawan, the state Congress headquarters, around 11.00 am. State Congress chief Subhankar Sarkar will be joined by other party leaders at the event. On November 26, 1949, the Constitution was formally adopted by the Constituency Assembly.
