Kolkata: A Bengal BJP team, which met the Election Commission on Wednesday, urged the poll panel to clarify the status of those who had taken shelter in India to escape religious persecution in Bangladesh. In its memorandum to EC, BJP also flagged "growing dissatisfaction" among members of the Matua community. The delegation, led by BJP state president Samik Bhattacharya and Bengal unit's co-minder Amit Malviya, highlighted "large-scale manipulation of the electoral rolls in the state during the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR)."
"The Matua community, along with other similarly situated Hindu migrants, has expressed growing dissatisfaction due to insufficient clarity on their documentation status," the BJP request said. It stressed the need to "proactively address" the Matua concerns through "targeted communication, public outreach and administrative support." Any "delay or lack of engagement" would foster "disillusionment" among the Matua community.
"We have requested the EC to specially focus on the illegal immigrants in India being registered as voters. Those who were subject to religious persecution and took shelter in India are citizens of this country. The EC should clarify their status and issue a statement towards that. People are getting confused in the face of propaganda and misinformation floated by Trinamool," Bhattacharya said after the delegation came out of Nirvachan Sadan.
Voters were being relocated to specific constituencies with the intent to "manipulate the outcome of the polls", BJP alleged and said that dead or shifted voters were "falsely being shown as parents or relatives of new voters." "We have requested the Election Commission to use AI, technology and data management," said Malviya.
BJP alleged that the state administration and TMC workers were pressuring BLOs to accept fraudulent entries. The party said the mandatory honorarium of Rs 18,000 due to BLOs had not been released by the state govt. "They did not even approve recruitment in the post of data entry operators. If the BLOs are being overworked, then the CM is responsible for it," Malviya said.
