  • Kolkata: Siuli Sarkar, principal of Lady Brabourne College, and Sunanda Goenka, principal of Jogesh Chandra Choudhuri Law College, who had resigned from Calcutta University's syndicate, its highest decision-making body, are set to return to it. They on Thursday will attend a syndicate meeting, the first to be held after Asutosh Ghosh joined as CU's permanent vice-chancellor.

Both the principals of the CU-affiliated colleges had resigned during the tenure of interim VC Santa Datta De following a difference of opinion with her. After Ghosh became the permanent VC, CU contacted them, asking them to rejoin the syndicate.

Sarkar, who was appointed to the syndicate in Aug 2023, had resigned in Sept, while Goenka sent in her resignation in March this year.

"An undemocratic atmosphere in the syndicate had forced me to resign. I got a call from the university to represent govt colleges under CU, and I agreed as I know the new VC well and I hope positive steps will be taken under him," Sarkar said. Goenka said she agreed to return as a lot of issues with the law courses had to be addressed.

VC Ghosh said, "Principals' representation is important as different colleges face issues that need to be discussed and sorted out."
