Kolkata: A 20-year-old resident of Bosepukur Prantik Pally in Kasba was reportedly shot in an arm around 11.30 pm on Wednesday night. The victim was admitted to Ruby General Hospital with a bullet injury in his left hand, said doctors treating him.
Abhijit Naiya, alias Nigro, told the police that he was standing by the canal alone when two masked men on a bike approached him. According to his statement, the assailants accused him of engaging in unwanted altercations with their associates before attempting to shoot him. Naiya alleged that he was shot while trying to wrest the gun away from them, after which the attackers fled the scene.
However, upon further investigation, the police found discrepancies in Naiya's account. The police probe then established that the victim might have shot himself while trying to show off a loaded 9mm gun, which he and two others kept in their possession illegally.
"When questioned, he broke down and stated that he, along with his friend Abhijit Sardar alias Babai (33) from Naskarpara and another friend, have been keeping a 9mm pistol for a long time. On Wednesday, a bullet was somehow fired when they were handling it after drinking liquor by the side of the canal. An FIR has been registered at the Kasba Police Station in this regard under sections of the BNS and Arms Act," said Rupesh Kumar, joint CP (crime & traffic).
Sardar has been arrested after initially being detained for possession of illegal arms while cops are searching for the third member of the group who is on the run. The police have recovered the firearm used in the incident. Naiya is currently being treated at Ruby General Hospital.
The incident set off an alarm, especially after Kolkata Police commissioner Manoj Verma called for a special drive against illegal arms in the crime meeting held last weekend, leading to local cops and the detective department forming teams to comb areas of Kasba, Anandapur, Tiljala, and Topsia.
This incident has heightened concerns about the proliferation of illegal firearms in this part of the city. Last year, local councillor Sushanta Ghosh survived a firing attempt on him not far from the spot where the shooting took place on Wednesday night.
The police are trying to piece together the full extent of the illegal activities surrounding the possession and use of the firearm, and may file additional charges as the investigation progresses.
