Malda: A violent clash erupted at a kangaroo court in Kaliachak on Thursday morning, resulting in the death of one individual and leaving six seriously injured.
The conflict originated from a dispute between two groups of villagers from Rajnagar over land tilling rights. On Wednesday, tensions flared when one group allegedly drove a tractor over the other's maize fields in the Ganga river char area. One person was reportedly assaulted.
A kangaroo court was convened at Rajnagar Model Madrasa to resolve the issue. Local Trinamool functionaries Samsul Sk, Moktar Sk and Manirul Sk were present at the meeting. However, before any settlement could be reached, a violent confrontation erupted between the two groups, who resorted to using weapons.
Ekramul Sk, 45, was severely injured and rushed to Kaliachak Hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries en route. Badsha Sk, one of the critically injured, was referred to Malda Medical College and Hospital.
Sariul Sk, a relative of the deceased, accused Samsul and others of orchestrating the attack. Malda police chief Pradeep Yadav said: "Seven individuals have been detained in connection with the incident."
