Storage period of potatoes extended till end of December
The Statesman | 28 November 2025
The agricultural marketing department at Khadya Bhawan has issued a notification regarding the extension of the potato storage period in the state’s cold storages.
As per the notification, the statutory period for storing potatoes in cold storages under Rule 4(n), Schedule I of the West Bengal Cold Storage (Licensing and Regulation) Rules, 1967, is 30 November. This period is generally extended from time to time by notification, depending on stock conditions.
Reports on the present stock position submitted by the director of agricultural marketing, based on periodic returns from cold storage licensees, indicate that a substantially good quantity of potatoes remains in storage. These stocks need to be retained and released beyond 30 November to meet domestic market requirements until the arrival of the new crop.
Accordingly, in order to utilise the existing stock, safeguard the interests of hirers, and ensure availability of potatoes in the markets during December and January 2026, and after careful consideration of the situation, the Governor has extended the storage period up to 31 December in all cold storages of West Bengal, with pro-rata additional rent:
Rs 20.22 per quintal for south Bengal districts
Rs 20.66 per quintal for north Bengal districts
Cold storage licensees are entitled to charge the above-mentioned additional rent for use of storage space during the extended period.
This notification has been issued with the approval of the competent authority and in the public interest.
