The Indian Army has extended support to the local community of Yumthang Valley by providing specialised high-altitude adventure equipment to boost community-led tourism initiatives in the region, the PRO Defence said on Thursday.
According to the PRO Defence, the equipment includes camping gear, climbing essentials, safety items, cooking sets and basic high-altitude support tools. This assistance will help villagers set up structured adventure camps for the daily footfall of around 20-25 tourists visiting the valley.
Army officials said the initiative will enable local youth to offer guided trekking, camping and other basic adventure experiences in a safe and organised manner, strengthening the region’s adventure tourism potential. Pema Dorjee, Pipon of Lachung Dzumsa, who is overseeing the community venture, welcomed the support.
“This assistance allows our youth to organise adventure activities in a structured way and welcome more visitors with confidence. It strengthens our ability to manage tourism responsibly and create sustainable livelihood opportunities,” he said.
The PRO Defence added that the initiative enhances local capacity, promotes responsible tourism and supports economic growth in one of Sikkim’s most picturesque high-altitude regions. The effort is also aligned with the Army’s broader outreach programmes in North Sikkim, including Ranbhoomi Darshan, aimed at promoting border-area tourism and deepening community engagement.
