• SIR ‘hurry’ to blame for suicides & deaths: CPM
    Times of India | 28 November 2025
  • Kolkata: CPM on Thursday alleged that there was an attempt to disenfranchise people through the special intensive revision (SIR). The "hurriedly conducted" revision process had resulted in stress, suicides and deaths, it added.

"Election Commission took the decision to conduct SIR in West Bengal long ago. They could have initiated the process much earlier, which would have made the process easier for BLOs and voters. It seems that the process will end up disenfranchising people and we will not allow that to happen," CPM state secretary Md Salim said.

"Both BJP and Trinamool are trying to make people believe that they are being granted the right to vote. Voting rights are not entitlements but a right of every citizen," Salim added.

SUCI, which submitted a deputation with the Election Commission, also highlighted the deaths and suicides owing to the SIR process.
