• Happening today in Bengal: EC’s deadline to Kolkata Police for BLO protest ends; protest in JU over council polls

  • The 48-hour deadline given to Kolkata Police by the Election Commission over the ongoing protest by a section of BLOs against “SIR work pressure” ends today. The EC had sent off a notice to Kolkata Police, calling the BLOs’ protest on Monday outside the State Chief Electoral Office in Kolkata’s Dalhousie area a “serious security breach”. The EC had sought an action taken report from the city police and set a November 28 deadline. All eyes will be on whether Kolkata Police submit the report, and if EC is satisfied by its Action Taken Report.

    The task force, set up by the West Bengal government, to monitor food prices in the state, is scheduled to visit Maniktala and Bagmari wholesale markets today. The task force is entrusted with the responsibility of monitoring the prices and alerting the government in case there is an upward tick. With the elections round the corner, the work of the task force has become all more important as the TMC government would not like to see prices of essential commodities rise in the state.

    The ruling TMC-affiliated students council at the Jadavpur University in Kolkata on Friday will organise a hunger strike outside the office of the vice-chancellor over the postponement of the Internal Liaison Committee/Council) elections. The election, which was set to take place on November 27 has been postponed to December 2. The JU cited “logistical issues” for the postponement.
