  • Kolkata: Faculty, staff, and students of Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) on Friday created a human chain, followed by a rally around the campus, and a street corner at Dunlop crossing, to demand withdrawal of the draft ISI bill.

While they called for greater support from political parties to bolster their movement. Trinamool MP Saugata Roy said he would raise the issue at the winter session of Parliament. Roy has started talking to Union minister Rao Inderjit Singh. "The draft bill will take away the autonomy of the institute," Roy said.

"We don't oppose modernisation or change. But the proposed bill is against the interest of the institute," said Arijit Bishnu, an ISI faculty member. Partha Pratim Majumdar, another faculty member, expressed concern over turning the institute into a "body corporate".
