Left Front moves to forge broader alliance ahead Assembly polls

With the 2026 Assembly elections approaching, the Left Front last night initiated a move to build a broader Left alliance in Bengal, expanding beyond its existing partners. At a meeting of the Front, a preliminary decision was taken to bring together Left-leaning parties such as CPI(ML) Liberation and the SUCI(C) along with the traditional Front allies in an effort to consolidate Left unity before the polls.
According to leaders present at the meeting, the Front is prepared to offer Assembly seats to Liberation and the SUCI(C) as part of the seat-sharing arrangement, should the proposed wider Left alliance materialise. However, the SUCI(C) has not yet stated its position on joining such an alliance or engaging in seat negotiations with the CPI-M-led Left Front. A senior leader from one of the Front constituents said: “Our aim is to build a larger Left unity by including Liberation and SUCI(C). Discussions are underway and we are hopeful of reaching an understanding.” The meeting also decided that the Left Front would hold a protest rally in front of the Election Commission of India’s office on 10 December, a day after the publication of the draft electoral roll. The 10 December demonstration will be held in protest against such alleged omissions in the voter list.
Meanwhile, the CPI-M is set to launch its ‘Bangla Bachao Yatra’ (Save Bengal March) from 29 November. Leaders of all Front constituents have been invited to join the programme. Addressing the media at Alimuddin Street, CPI-M state secretary Mohammed Salim said the march would highlight issues related to livelihood, employment, education, and healthcare.
