Kolkata: A traffic police sergeant had a narrow escape as a drunk truck driver reportedly tried to run him over on Diamond Harbour Road at Pathakpara in Behala on Thursday night, after being flagged down.
The incident took place around 11.30 pm at a check naka at Pathakpara, where sergeant Biprojit Biswas was on duty. Biswas from the Diamond Harbour Road traffic guard spotted the fish-laden truck, registered in Andhra Pradesh, speeding down the road. He had an alert that the driver had broken the barrier at Behala Chowrasta, where cops had noticed him driving drunk.
Ignoring Biswas's signal to stop, the heavy goods vehicle driver attempted to speed away. Despite Biswas positioning his bike in the vehicle's path, the truck driver did not stop and instead, rammed into it. Biswas quickly jumped away, narrowly avoiding being hit, though the motorcycle was severely damaged. The collision brought the truck to a halt and the driver was arrested by cops from the Behala PS.
The driver has been slapped with multiple charges, including attempted murder of a police officer, driving under the influence and obstructing govt work.
Biswas's bravery and quick action drew praises from his seniors who assured of measures to prevent such incidents.
