• Two minors’ parents held for child marriage

  • Kolkata: The parents of two teenagers, who were married off two months ago, were arrested from the port area on Saturday. The new bride and groom have been sent to shelter homes.

    The incident came to light following an e-mail alert to police from Child Helpline, District Child Protection Unit, Kolkata. The boy, 17 years old, and the girl, 14, got married on Sept 1. The wedding was held at a Nitya Ghosh Street address, under the jurisdiction of Watgunge Police Station.

    The boy is a resident of Kidderpore, while the girl is a resident of Watgunge. Following the wedding, the girl moved in with the boy and his family, said police. It was from her in-laws' place that the girl was rescued, police said.

    The case has been registered under Section 11 of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, which addresses the illegal solemnization of child marriages.
