The police in Kolkata have arrested a man after a 28-year-old woman alleged that she was forced into a moving vehicle, drugged, molested, and dumped in the city on Friday.

Sources said the woman stated in her police complaint that she was waiting for a bus near Ambedkar Setu on EM Bypass at 8 pm on Friday when she was abducted, after which she was molested and dumped in the Maidan area, adding that she had been in the car for an hour.

The police identified the arrested man as Altaf Alam, 24, a resident of the Garden Reach area.

When the police found her, the woman was said to be heavily drugged. She was taken to SSKM Hospital, where her statement was recorded. She filed a complaint at the Pragati Maidan police station. Based on her complaint, the police and the detective department initiated an investigation.

The police have examined footage from CCTV cameras of important intersections. As per the police, three people were involved in the crime, and efforts are on to nab the rest of them.

The police are also verifying the allegation that one of the culprits could be an acquaintance of the woman.

Meanwhile, Union minister Sukanta Majumdar blamed the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress Government for the law and order situation.

“In a state where chief ministers question victims instead of acting against the accused, what do you expect there. Sometimes she says the girl had a love affair, as she had said in the Hanskhali case. The girl could be pregnant too… When the approach of the chief minister, who is the supreme authority of the administration, is like this regarding those who commit crimes against women, or the criminals, then law and order will surely decline in that state. It’s only natural for such a crime to take place,” the BJP leader said.

Manoj Verma, Commissioner of Police, Kolkata, said the investigation was underway.
