  • Kolkata: The mercury is set to slide in Kolkata and south Bengal from Wednesday and could drop to 15°C by Friday. Maximum temperature, too, could drop to 26°C by the end of the week, said the Regional Meteorological Centre.

The minimum temperature may slide by 2°C-4°C over the next four days. "The northwesterly winds are getting stronger and blowing in unobstructed, leading to a gradual onset of chill. The normal temperature, too, is sliding. That apart, cool northerly winds have also started flowing in, adding to the chill. The combined effect will lead to a chilly spell which is normal in Dec," said deputy director-general of meteorology H R Biswas.

Kolkata recorded a minimum temperature of 18°C and a maximum of 27°C on Monday. It could remain unchanged on Tuesday.

The chilliest spell so far was recorded between last Tuesday and Thursday, with the minimum temperature plunging to 16.4°C on Tuesday — the lowest recorded so far this season. It inched up to 16.6°C on Wednesday and dipped to 16.4°C again on Thursday. "The cold northwesterly winds have been flowing in at a good pace this month. There have been no obstructions in the form of systems that generate clouds and change wind direction," said a weather scientist.
