Kol North tops list with 6.9% of its total electors now dead

Kolkata: With the enumeration phase of the SIR exercise entering its final lap, Kolkata North has emerged at the top with the highest percentage of dead voters, followed by Kolkata South.
The Election Commission has identified 1,04,076 deceased voters, which is 6.9% of the total electors in Kolkata North as on Tuesday afternoon. Kolkata South follows with 54,985 deceased voters, which is 6% of the total electors in that Lok Sabha constituency.
A senior EC official said, "Till 4 pm on Tuesday, 46.2 lakh distributed forms are ‘Uncollectable' from deceased, untraceable, permanently shifted, and duplicate voters across the state. Among these forms, close to 22.3 lakh are deceased voters. The numbers of untraceable, permanently shifted, and duplicate voters are 6.4 lakh, 16.2 lakh and 1 lakh, respectively."
The number of ‘Uncollectable' forms, including the deceased electors, stood at 43.3 lakh on Monday. The figure increased by 2.9 lakh in past 24 hours.
"Among the deceased voters across Bengal so far, the highest percentage has been identified in Kolkata North, where 6.9% of total electors were found dead during the enumeration process. In Kolkata South, 6% of total electors have been identified as dead. For North 24 Parganas and South 24 Parganas, we have found 3.4% and 3.2% of total electors as deceased," the official added.
In North and South 24 Parganas, the EC has found 2,88,000 and 2,79,000 deceased voters, respectively.
Percentage-wise, East Midnapore and West Midnapore are at the bottom of the list of deceased voters. In East Midnapore, 1.4% of total electors have been found dead. For West Midnapore, the figure is 2%.
A list of polling booths with a very large number of ‘not-verified' applicants has been shared with the special roll observer and 12 electoral roll observers for further checking.
Meanwhile, the CEO office asked the DEOs of Kolkata North, Kolkata South, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Howrah and Hooghly to identify and send a list of housing complexes, where polling stations can be set up, by Dec 6.
