• Work on Durga Angan to begin this month

  • Kolkata: Chief minister Mamata Banerjee will this month lay the foundation of ‘Durga Angan' in New Town, a temple complex, dedicated to Durga.

    "According to India Tourism data for 2025, Bengal received 24 crore visitors in Oct alone. We are now No. 2, next year we will be No. 1. We have invested heavily in religious and educational tourism. Jagannath Dham is built. Land for the Mahakali Temple in Siliguri has been allocated, in New Town, Durga Angan is being built across 15 acres. We will begin work in Dec," Banerjee said while presenting the account of the past 15 years at Nabanna on Tuesday.

    Finance minister Chandrima Bhattacharya confirmed the foundation ceremony would be held on a Dec date, set by the CM. Durga Angan will be built under the supervision of Hidco at around Rs 262 crore. A state official said the initiative, prompted by Unesco's heritage tag for Durga Puja, aimed to create a place of worship, which would also attract tourists year-round. A trust will be formed for the complex.
