Kolkata: A young woman residing in south Kolkata showed exceptional courage after she teamed up with a delivery agent to nab her molester on an empty street while returning home at night.
The incident took place around midnight on Sunday in Netaji Nagar. The complainant chased down the accused by hopping on to a food delivery agent's bike. A crowd gathered in the area soon after the woman cried out "thief" to attract attention, making it impossible for the accused to flee from the spot. Police from Netaji Nagar PS arrived at the spot and arrested the accused. He was identified as one Rishi Hazra.
According to police sources, the complainant was returning from an event on Sunday when the accused suddenly appeared and tried to molest her by touching her inappropriately before fleeing. The woman, though, immediately shouted and chased him.
She saw a food delivery boy returning home on his bike — one she was familiar with in the neighbourhood — and asked him to stop. She got on the bike and chased the accused, shouting "thief" while on the chase. After a short distance, they caught him.
Meanwhile, word spread in the area that a young woman caught a thief and a crowd gathered on the street. Based on the woman's complaint, a case of molestation was filed, and the accused was arrested.
The cops are investigating if the accused was involved in similar or other forms of crime in the area. CCTV footage of the area has also been collected, said police sources.
The accused was presented before the Alipore court on Monday. Saikat Rakshit, the legal aid lawyer for the accused, stated that the CCTV footage did not show the accused committing the crime. However, govt lawyer Sajjad Khan mentioned that there is sufficient evidence of the accused's actions, which led to his arrest. After the hearing, the court sent the accused to judicial custody.
