Kolkata: A 73-year-old pedestrian, Shambhunath Das, who was crossing the road died at the JM Avenue-Shyambazar Street intersection around 7 pm on Tuesday when a minibus ran him over in a bid to overtake another bus. The driver fled the spot.
Shyampukur cops have registered a case.
Locals blocked the road, demanding action against reckless driving, before cops managed to disperse the crowd.
According to witnesses and passengers on the bus, the driver was going slowly until he noticed another bus on the route attempting to overtake and sped up.
Cops said Das was crossing the road near Shyambazar AV School when he was grazed by a bike and then came under a Shyambazar-Howrah Maidan minibus which was trying to overtake a Nimta-Howrah minibus.
The driver and conductor fled after stopping the bus a short distance away.
