Kolkata: An 11-year-old student of class 5 residing in the Bagmari area was severely injured after falling off his father's bike and having his leg crushed under a truck around 6.35 am on Wednesday. The incident was reported from Maniktala Main Road, next to Maniktala govt bus depot and close to the Bengal Chemical gate.
The student, Srinjoy Dutta of Bidhannagar Municipal School, was admitted to a private hospital off EM Bypass. It is stated that he remains critical but is responding to treatment.
According to locals, as soon as the truck hit the bike, Dutta was thrown on to the road. The truck driver allegedly continued driving, crushing Dutta's leg. The truck driver reportedly attempted to flee but was caught by locals.
Cops, analysing CCTV footage, claimed a different sequence of events. "The biker, Gautam Dutta (47) was trying to overtake the truck from the left. The biker had a helmet, but his son was without one. It seems that while negotiating one of the five speed breakers, at a point where the road takes a slight curve, the handle of the bike caught the truck. As a result, both riders fell. The boy fell to his right while his father fell to the left. The truck's rear left tyre went over the student's leg even as everyone shouted out warnings. The truck driver heard the alarm, realised something was wrong, and braked. But these few seconds between the incident and the truck coming to a halt were enough to severely injure the boy," an officer said.
Locals handed over the truck driver to cops.
"Since the injury's impact is on the boy's muscles, we are hoping he will pull through. However, it will take some time before he can resume daily activities. The doctors have not called for amputation," an officer said.
