Kolkata: A sessions court in Kolkata on Wednesday sentenced five men to life imprisonment after finding them guilty for conspiring to carry out terrorist attacks in India, wage war against the govt and possessing fake Indian documents despite being Bangladeshi nationals.
One more accused, Abdul Kalam, was discharged for lack of evidence. All six had been arrested nine years ago by Kolkata Police STF.
Those convicted include Anwar Hossain Faruque, Md Rubel, Maulana Yusuf Sk, Md Sahidul Islam and Jabirul Islam. Their sentence was laid down under sections 120B, 121, 121A, 122, 123 and 124A, relating to waging war against the nation, as well as provisions of Foreigners Act and Explosive Substances Act.
Maulana Yusuf Sk got an additional life sentence under Section 121A for his role in the planned subversive activities. The Bangladeshi nationals were also penalized under Section 14 of the Foreigners Act for their illegal stay in India.
The case dates back to Sept 2016, when six suspected members of Bangladesh-based terrorist outfit, Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) were arrested following an STF operation based on intelligence inputs about their illegal entry into India through the India-Bangladesh border in North 24 Parganas. At the time, it was alleged that the group was planning bomb blasts in various parts of India, including the northeast and south Indian states.
