  • Kolkata: A chilly weekend is in the offing for Kolkata, which could see the minimum temperature slide to 15°C. The mercury started sliding in Kolkata on Wednesday and a drop of 2°C-3°C in the minimum temperature is expected over the next two days.

This chill may last until at least Dec 10, during which the minimum temperature in Kolkata may drop to 15°C on Dec 6. While the city recorded a minimum of 17.7°C on Wednesday, it could slide to 16°C on Thursday. The drop may continue further due to a strong and chilly northwesterly wind.

The minimum could continue to remain 15°C until Monday, after which there would be a gradual rise. The chilliest spell so far was recorded between last Tuesday and Thursday, with the minimum temperature plunging to 16.4°C on Tuesday – the lowest recorded so far this season. It inched up to 16.6°C on Wednesday and dipped to 16.4°C again on Thursday.

"The cold northwesterly winds have been flowing in at a good pace this month. There have been no obstructions in the form of systems that generate clouds and change the direction of the wind," said a weather scientist.
