  • Malda/Kolkata: Chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday announced that ‘May I Help You' camps will function in all blocks across Bengal from Dec 12 to ensure that no voter's name is struck off the electoral rolls during the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) for want of documents.

Banerjee said BJP has dug its own grave in Bengal by undertaking the "disastrous" SIR spanning three months.

Election Commission will publish a draft voters list on Dec 16. After that, voters with no linkages with the SIR 2002 list or whose documents need to be scrutinised will be called to hearings.

Addressing a rally in Malda's Gazole, Banerjee said, "We are opening a ‘May I Help You' camp in each block for those who are deprived. I already announced it in Tuesday's meeting. Today, I am saying the camps will be held in every block from Dec 12. Whatever (documents) you need, you will get them at the camps."

Banerjee asked Trinamool Congress workers to "work actively" to help voters and booth-level officers.

Alleging that Union home minister Amit Shah is getting the SIR done ahead of the assembly elections "to shut down the state govt", the CM said, "Remember, no matter how hard they (BJP) try, capturing Bengal is a distant dream. Know this, people here do not support you. Bihar is different... You have taken over Bihar, but you will not be able to capture Bengal. Even the British failed to do so. So, how could you?"

She added, "You are doing this on purpose so that the state machinery is paralysed and all development work stops six months before the elections."

Banerjee reiterated that she would never allow any detention camp in Bengal or any genuine voter to be deported.

"Make sure your names are included in the list. If your name is not on the draft list, you must go to the hearing. If you don't, they will remove your name. Today, I heard the (EC) servers are down. There is no need to worry. You won't be pushed out (of the country) and there will be no detention camps. I am your security. I am your protector," she said. The CM cited deaths in Bengal and other states that have been linked to the SIR to criticise the way the roll revision is being carried out.

"Nine BLOs have died in Maharashtra. In Gujarat, 3 to 4 BLOs have died. There have been deaths in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Bengal as well. Here, 39 have died due to SIR. Thirteen are in hospital in a critical condition. Another three tried to kill themselves. They are now recovering. Why are you doing this before the elections? The citizens again have to prove they belong to India?" the CM said.
