Kolkata: A 53-year-old biker from Bishnupur, Sujit Khamaru, lost his right leg after being injured in an accident on Wednesday that involved a private bus, a car, and two bikes. He is in a critical but stable condition at Belle Vue Hospital after undergoing an operation. At least one more biker was injured while three others escaped with minor scratches.
The incident was reported on Diamond Harbour Road near Sakherbazar metro station on the Taratala-bound flank around 8.50 am. The driver of the bus managed to flee after the accident.
When Khamaru was rescued, he was bleeding profusely, and the lower part of his right leg was severed and lay a few metres away. Cops arranged for a private vehicle and removed him — along with his leg — to Vidyasagar Hospital, from there to SSKM Hospital, and finally to Belle Vue.
"The patient has suffered irreversible vascular damage in the severed part of the leg and it will not be possible to fix it," said Belle Vue Hospital CEO P Tondon. A surgery was conducted by an orthopaedic surgeon and a plastic surgeon to repair the damage. "He was shifted to a bed and remains stable. At a later stage, he can use an artificial limb. But it is still too early since he will have to wait for the wounds to heal," Tondon added.
The accident seemed to be primarily due to the bus driver losing control of the vehicle. Cops believe there were technical issues and the bus was not fit to be on the road. Though locals claimed it was racing against another bus, footage from the spot does not support the same.
According to another injured biker, Imran Ali Molla (34), the bus — plying between Diamond Harbour and Esplanade — crossed Silpara bus stop when it swerved. A witness, Samiran Saha, said, "Molla overtook him and a car. Our bus swerved left and hit a car carrying two persons. This car hit Molla and another car ahead of it. The bus driver swerved wildly to the right in order to flee, but hit Khamaru. He was dragged along the median. A third biker, coming from the right rear of the bus, was also injured, although there was no collision," Saha said.
Molla was treated at Vidyasagar State General Hospital and SSKM Hospital, before being discharged.
"The long-distance bus collided with a number of vehicles, including two private cars and two bikes. The two cars were partially damaged and the occupants unhurt while the bikers sustained injuries. Thakurpukur PS took charge of the bus and a probe is on," said DC (Behala-South West) Rahul De.
The accident caused traffic disruption for a few minutes till cops and emergency services cleared the area.
