Set a deadline by the Election Commission’s Special Roll Observer (SRO) of submitting the approximately 1.46 lakh remaining enumeration forms by tonight, the offices of the District Electoral Officer (DEO) and the Block Level Officers concerned were working late into the night tonight to meet it.
SRO Subrata Gupta, accompanied by the Electoral Roll Observer (ERO) for East Burdwan and Birbhum, Smita Pandey, arrived in Burdwan district’s administrative corridors this morning and held series of discussions with the administration officials and the representatives of different political parties in phases that ended in the evening.
Gupta instructed the East Burdwan district administration this afternoon to ensure absolute completion of the entire enumeration form submissions by Wednesday night. He asked the senior officials to explain why so many forms had still not been submitted and uploaded. “Collect and upload the enumeration forms latest by tonight by any means,” he told them.
The district has estimated 18,401 traceless voters and the BLOs of different areas couldn’t establish contact with 641 voters as yet. The issue of substantial increase in the figure of dead voters was also discussed at length. Gupta incidentally was the District Magistrate of undivided Burdwan in 2000.
He admitted that many EROs have complained about some technical glitches, including software problems. He said: “We can estimate the accuracy of the work done only after the draft roll publication. After the draft publication, the Booth Level Officers, EROs and the supervisors should further visit the localities for additional scrutinizing to secure an errorless roll.”
East Burdwan has 16 Assembly constituencies with an electorate of approximately 41.25 lakh voters spread over 4,506 booths. So far, 95,702 deceased voters were detected during the SIR this year, with 5,477 names found as multiple entries.
