  • Kolkata: Hours after a major accident on DH Road on Wednesday morning, cops at the James Long Sarani-SN Roy Road crossing came under attack from a motorist. A test on the accused driver revealed that he was heavily drunk. The incident occurred at a drink-driving naka.

Police said, they initially noticed that the man was driving towards them recklessly. The driver was moving from east to west along SN Roy Road around 10.30 pm when he was asked to stop to undergo the breathalyser test.

Upon interception by civic volunteers, the driver was subjected to a breathalyser test, which revealed an alarming blood alcohol concentration of 73.0 mg/100ml, significantly above the legal limit. The situation escalated when the driver allegedly refused to get out of his car for confiscation. He then suddenly started assaulting two on-duty civic volunteers, SK Irsad Ali and Asit Malik, from James Long Traffic Guard and Behala Police. As a result, both the civic volunteers sustained injuries and were subsequently treated at the Vidyasagar State General Hospital.

This incident has prompted the Kolkata Police to issue a directive from Lalbazar, emphasizing the necessity for all officers to ensure their body cameras are operational during duty. In this particular case, the civic volunteers were not wearing cams as they are not issued the same. "In such cases, their seniors must record the same," said an officer.
