  • Kolkata: A trainee pilot was found hanging in Girish Park on Wednesday night. Soumyaditya Kundu (21) the only child of his parents and a resident of central Kolkata, had returned from South Africa in October, where he was pursuing an aviation course. Even as the family was celebrating on Wednesday afternoon, he suddenly went missing from his home. His parents began searching for him across the city. Later, on Wednesday night, after hours of physical and technical surveillance, police recovered his hanging body from a "presently unoccupied" home belonging to one of his uncles at Girish Park. A tablet was recovered from his room with the word "LOST" written on it in all caps.

On Wednesday around 9.40 pm Girish Park PS got information that a young man was found hanging near the vicinity of Girish Park Metro Railway number 3. The duty officer and his team found Kundu, a resident of Madhu Roy Lane, hanging on the second floor of the building located on CR Avenue. His body was taken to Medical College & Hospital where he was declared dead at 11.21 pm.

"During the enquiry, it was learnt that Kundu was in a relationship with a girl, and there might be some crisis in that relationship," said Joint CP (Crime & Traffic) Rupesh Kumar. "No foul play could be detected so far, and no complaint was received from any corner as yet. Arrangements are being made to hold an inquest and post-mortem of the victim to ascertain the actual cause of death. An unnatural death case has been initiated on Thursday at Girish Park PS," added Kumar. Kundu was slated to return to South Africa in Jan 2026 to complete his training.

Kundu's father said, "He wasn't answering his phone since Wednesday afternoon."
