Kolkata: A call centre employee, residing in Sarsuna, is currently on the run after allegedly blackmailing a woman and posting their intimate photographs on the dark web for sale. The accused also used a fake Instagram account to upload other pictures of the woman.
The complainant, a college student, lodged an FIR, accusing the man of harassment and threats of forwarding those photographs to her friends and relatives.
According to the complaint, the accused, who had married the woman under false pretences for "barely a day", began harassing her after she returned to her parents' home the next day. The harassment included threatening calls at odd hours, visits to her home late at night, and threats of physical harm, including acid attack.
The situation escalated when the accused allegedly uploaded intimate photographs of the couple on social media under various pseudonyms and tried "auctioning" them. The woman discovered the images through a friend and alerted the authorities.
In her complaint, she claimed the accused would also accost her parents on the road and threaten them. "He is extremely abusive and has been stalking me both online and offline," she said.
Cops said they are investigating all angles. "We are using technical leads to nab him," an officer said.
In response to the rising number of cyberstalking cases, cops released a 40-second video advising the public on how to protect themselves from such threats. Cops are also asking victims to contact them or dial 1930, where they can get counselling if needed.
