Abhishek Banerjee’s vision expanded further as MP Partha Bhowmick announced the launch of Sebaashray in Barrackpore.
Inspired by the vision and successful implementation of Sebaashray 2 in Diamond Harbour under the leadership of MP Abhishek Banerjee, Barrackpore MP Partha Bhowmick has also announced the launch of a similar initiative for his constituency.
The announcement came after the Barrackpore MP visited Diamond Harbour to see for himself how the model is working.
The programme, aimed at delivering accessible and compassionate healthcare to citizens at their doorstep, is likely to begin from 5 January, 2026, starting from Halisahar in the Bijpur Assembly segment.
During his recent visit to the Sebaashray 2 camp in Diamond Harbour, the MP observed and witnessed how the model has transformed primary and specialist healthcare delivery by prioritising service over politics.
The programme’s focus on empathy-driven governance, seamless access to specialist consultations, and proactive outreach has been widely praised as a benchmark in constituency-level welfare.
“We will inaugurate Sebaashray at Halisahar Ramprasad Khelar Math on 5 January. We are meeting on 7 December to finalise the finer points and different modalities. We will try to have three camps at every Vidhan Sabha area. We have seven Assembly constituencies, which will make it roughly a 21-day affair,” Mr Bhowmick told the Statesman on Thursday.
The MP said that the groundwork for arranging the huge workforce needed for the smooth running if the camps have been done already, which will be sourced locally.
“When Mamata Banerjee started moving medical units, providing services on wheels, and then Abhishek Banerjee started Sebaashray to provide collective health service to people, thousands of people benefited from the efforts. The vision of providing service to poor people and an extension of that vision in Sebaashray by Abhishek, has inspired me to also start Sebaashray in my Lok Sabha constituency,” said Partha Bhowmick.
The MP said that in Barrackpore, Jagatdal and Bhatpara moving medical units are already in operation. “If we add Sebaashray to these medical units, we can serve a large number of poor people in the area. We will have all kinds of facilities for the people at the camps and we have also spoken to the hospitals in the area for their support. If I can even replicate even 20 per cent of what Abhishek Banerjee has done, I will consider myself lucky. I will give my cent percent. I love to take challenges and that is one of the reasons why I was able to defeat Arjun Singh,” added Mr Bhowmick.
There are 2,200 booths in the Barrackpore LS constituency and the camps will also serve people, who are living in the area but are not voters, which roughly would add up to 35 lakh people, said a source.
