  • A medical student from West Bengal was among four MBBS trainees killed in a horrific road accident on the Delhi-Lucknow national highway late on Wednesday.

The tragedy occurred near Amroha in Uttar Pradesh, casting a pall of grief over Belgharia, from where the deceased, Arnab Chakraborty, hailed. According to police sources, the accident took place around 9 p.m. on the service road near Rajabpur police station. A truck loaded with foam mattresses was parked along one side of the road when a four-wheeler travelling from the Gajraula side rammed into the rear of the stationary vehicle. The four occupants of the car — all MBBS students — were returning after duty when the driver reportedly lost control. The impact was so severe that the vehicle was completely mangled, leaving all four dead on the spot.

Arnab Chakraborty was a 2020 batch MBBS student of Shri Venkateshwara University in Uttar Pradesh. Having completed his studies this year, he had been undergoing his mandatory internship and was expected to return to Kolkata in a few months. His family had even begun preparing a new room for him, hopeful that he would start his professional career while staying with them. “We were waiting for him to come home. Everything was being readied for his return,” said Arnab’s father, Arun Chakraborty, struggling to hold back his grief.

Neighbours described Arnab as a bright, soft-spoken and affable youth who had always excelled in academics. News of his untimely death has left the entire neighbourhood in shock. Besides Arnab, the other victims were identified as Ayush Sharma, Saptarshi Das and Shreshta Pancholi. All four were pursuing their internships after completing MBBS. Uttar Pradesh Police have initiated a detailed investigation into the accident. Arnab’s family has requested the authorities to expedite arrangements to bring his body back to Kolkata.
