  • The Election Commission (EC) today cracked the whip on the District Election Officers (DEOs) and Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) over the proper verification of deceased voters, asking both to dig deeper in order to get the correct information on dead voters in the municipalities and gram panchayats before making a conclusion on the voters’ lists.
The EC’s latest notification to the Chief Electoral Officers of 12 states has earmarked a seven-point directive with regard to the list of dead voters, asking them to come down sternly on the DEOs and EROs over the proper compilation of dead voters in the lists.
EC sources said the DEOs and EROs had been directed to verify the names of the deceased with the concerned authorities in municipalities and gram panchayats, verifying them with details of ration cards, bank accounts, LIC, Cooperative banks and from old age pension and other human welfare schemes.

A meeting held at Nirvachan Sadan in New Delhi with the CEOs of the 12 states decided that the EROs would have to tally the information put on the ECI website, the sources said.
A software on identifying duplicate voters had been launched by the poll panel today. The EROs would have to match the information in the software with the data and photos they have collected in order to verify the identity of alleged duplicate voters.
