Sealdah Division resumes MEMU services with toilets
The Statesman | 6 December 2025
In what comes as a major relief to the passengers availing passenger trains between Kolkata and Lalgola, the Sealdah Division today resumed the services of the MEMU train with toilets in the route.
Before the Mahakumbh Mela held last year, the Sealdah Division had eight MEMU rakes. To cater to huge demand during the congregation, four of these MEMU rakes were sent to cater to the passengers at Kumbh Mela. After the rakes being sent, the division was left with four MEMU rakes of which one was under maintenance while the remaining three were being operated on various routes. Of the three, one such rake was being run from Sealdah to Siuri while the other two are being operated between Sealdah and Godda, according to sources.
To cater to the huge demand for such rakes, the divisional railway decided to convert 11 MEMU services into EMU services along with the bifurcation of nine Sealdah / Kolkata – Lalgola – Sealdah /Kolkata EMU services into two separate segments. The bifurcated segments included Sealdah/Kolkata – Krishnanagar EMU services and Krishnanagar – Lalgola EMU services and vice versa. The divisional railway had even announced services in this pattern earlier in June. However, the decision was later withdrawn by the authorities.
