  • After Sunali Khatun and her 8-year-old son walked into India, the Trinamul Congress, which had been pursuing the case and backing the hapless family from Birbhum, claimed victory.

Sources said that both TMC chairperson Mamata Banerjee and party’s national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee had been following the developments since the time when they were pushed into Bangladesh.

Sources said that Abhishek Banerjee has expressed his happiness on Sunali and her child’s return to India. In closed circles, Abhishek said that this is Bengal’s win as we didn’t bow down to the tyranny of Delhi zamindars against Bengal’s people.

“Our fight will continue to bring back others too who were illegally sent back to Bangladesh by Bangla-Birodhi BJP. Abhishek is soon supposed to meet Sunali and her family.

Trinamul MP Samirul Islam, who is also West Bengal Migrant Workers’ Welfare Board chairperson and had been working had to bring the family back, told The Statesman, “That lot of people stood beside Sunali, not only me. They were pushed into Bangladesh despite their family possessing land rights of 1952 and their parents’ name featuring in the 2002 electoral rolls. There are four others, who are still in Bangladesh jail. I’m hopeful that they too will come back as there is a court hearing on 12 December. They were harassed just for speaking Bengali and I consider that this victory is also for all the daily wagers.”

The TMC MP said that he was personally present welcoming Sunali into India and is happy that she is back to her ancestral home in Dorjipara, Paikar, Birbhum. “We had promised Sunali’s father, Bhadu Sheikh, and mother, Jyotsna Bibi, in Paikar that we will bring back your daughter. Today we have been able to keep that promise. This fight would not have been possible without the unwavering sympathy, sincere cooperation and clear guidance of Honorable Chief Ministers Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee. They ordered us to stand by this family from the beginning,” said Samirul in his FB post.

The FB post further mentioned: “Following that order, from maintaining regular contact with the family, to arranging legal assistance in Bangladesh, coordinating with lawyers from neighbouring countries, and a continuous legal battle from the Calcutta High Court to the Supreme Court, has been waged. The fruit of that fight is today—Sunali’s return to her homeland, holding her child’s hand. Thousands of people in the area were present with the national flag. Sunali is currently undergoing treatment at Rampurhat Medical Hospital. As per the order of the Supreme Court, her minor son is also being taken care of by the health department.”
