Housewife, partner booked with cannabis worth Rs 60 lakh

On hot pursuit, cops of two police stations intercepted the vehicle loaded with psychotropic substances and booked a housewife and her ‘business partner’ on a state highway in Kalna on Saturday.
Thirty three-year-old Babli Mallik of Balagarh, Hooghly was accompanying her partner Raju Das of Nadanghat in Kalna and the duo was fleeing desperately towards Kalna town with a consignment of cannabis worth Rs 60 lakh along the Saptagram – Tribeni – Kalna- Katwa state highway this morning.
Soon the police received a tip-off, forces from the Kalna and Purbasthali police stations were mobilised. The SP, East Burdwan, Sayak Das said that the suspected vehicle finally was apprehended between Nandai bridge and Parulia Bazar in Purbasthali and the cops cordoned the vehicle and detained the duo.
In presence of an Executive Magistrate, a thorough search of the vehicle was conducted and 83 kg of cannabis wrapped in 98 plastic packets were seized from inside. The police immediately arrested Babli and Raju and slapped charges of possessing and trafficking narcotics under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs & Psychotropic Substances Act’ 1995. The Kalna Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court granted 10 days police remand for them.
