Bharatpur MLA to move HC, to seek security after alleged death threats

Suspended Trinamul Congress MLA from Bharatpur, Humayun Kabir, on Monday said he will “very soon” approach the Calcutta High Court seeking enhanced security cover, claiming he has been receiving repeated death threats over the phone.
Kabir, who has recently triggered a political storm with the foundation-laying ceremony of a proposed “Babri Masjid” in Murshidabad’s Beldanga, said he now fears for his life and is living under constant insecurity. According to Kabir, the threat calls have intensified since the 6 December event. “I am receiving threats every day. They are saying I will be killed and that the mosque will not be allowed to be built. If Naushad Siddiqui can get security, so can I. I will move the High Court. For now, I have hired private security. I also have an important appointment in Bengaluru, so enhanced protection is essential,” he said.
Kabir’s decision to lay the foundation of what he described as a “Babri Masjid” drew immediate political backlash. The Trinamul Congress suspended him the same day, stating that there is “no place for communal politics” within the party. Senior TMC leader Firhad Hakim went a step further, alleging that Kabir was acting in collusion with the BJP. The state BJP, meanwhile, has sharply criticised Kabir’s move, while the Congress has also condemned the development.
Amid the controversy, the MLA appears determined to continue the initiative. At the 6 December event, Kabir had declared: “there will be no shortage of funds” for the mosque project. Since then, his residence in Raninagar has seen an unusual influx of cash donations. Eleven trunks and multiple sacks filled with cash have been deposited, according to his aides.
On Sunday, four trunks and one sack were opened, revealing stacks of notes significant enough to require the use of counting machines. Counting continued till midnight, with the total reaching nearly Rs 38 lakh from the five containers. Kabir claimed that the amount is likely to rise further as counting resumes. In addition to cash, donations through QR-code payments have also poured in, amounting to Rs 93 lakh, he asserted. The unfolding episode has created a fresh flashpoint in state politics.
