  • Kolkata: Renewable energy solution provider AMPIN Energy Transition, may invest over Rs 1,000 crore in Bengal for advanced solar cell and battery energy storage manufacturing and solar power plants. AMPIN Energy, which has the backing of a group of international institutional investors, has a capital of $700 million (around Rs 6,200 crore). The company has a portfolio of over 5 GWp (gigawatt peak) spread across 22 states in the country, catering to all types of customers: solar, wind, storage and hybrid.

Company MD and CEO Pinaki Bhattacharya, recently in the city, told TOI that it was identifying land in industrial parks in Bengal for manufacturing activities. "Ideally, 15-20 acres are required for a 1-2 gigawatt solar cell manufacturing facility. For manufacturing, the investment would be Rs 700 crore, and another Rs 300 crore would be for the power plant," he said. According to Bhattacharya, manufacturing at this scale would generate employment for up to 1,500 people, both directly and indirectly.

AMPIN is setting up a cell manufacturing facility in Odisha. "In Odisha, 15 gigawatts of manufacturing is coming. Bengal too would be finalized in due course," Bhattacharya said. The company is also setting up a 250 MWp solar power plant in Odisha, of which 100 MWp has started operation. The AMPIN MD pointed out that Bengal govt should incentivize cell manufacturing in the state.

According to Bhattacharya, the company is also keen to provide green energy solutions to data centres in Bengal. "A lot of data centres are coming into the state, and they would require clean energy solutions," he said. AMPIN already has some presence in Bengal through rooftop solar at Kharagpur in a Tata Hitachi plant. It has supplied 100 MW of green energy to WBSEDCL and 150 MW to CESC.
