  • Kolkata: The south division cops have formed a special team comprising officers from Maidan Police and the cyber cells, to track down the accused involved in assaulting two patty sellers, Sk Riyajul (50) and Md Salauddin (60), during a ‘Gita' recital at the Brigade Grounds on Sunday.

Sources said at least one of the main accused was traced to Gobardanga. Raids are expected to begin across North 24 Parganas. Cops said the identities of at least two of the accused were confirmed by Wednesday evening. "Both have strong political links," a police source said.

Cops said they forwarded the video to forensic experts and are employing AI-driven face recognition software and advanced Gait technology to match the assault footage with other footage from the area. "Besides this, social media leads are also being worked on," an officer said.

Sources said cops might get the statements of the two victims and a few witnesses recorded before a magistrate. "If needed, we will get a other vendors present there to record their statements," an officer said.

Riyajul, a resident of Purba Keshabpur in Hooghly's Arambagh, wrote in his FIR, "The attackers slapped and assaulted me, threatened me with dire consequences, and outraged my religious feelings by uttering insulting and malicious words."

The second FIR was lodged by Md Salauddin, a Tiljala Road resident. The allegations were the same. He, too, was assaulted and abused for selling chicken patties.

CPM leader and lawyer Sayan Banerjee has lodged a separate complaint.
