  • Kolkata: A joint team of officials from the state fire services department, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), and cops conducted an inspection drive at a dozen rooftop restaurants in some prime south Kolkata locations on Wednesday. The purpose was to check whether these restaurants had upgraded their fire safety norms as laid down by a special task force on fire safety before Durga Puja.

According to a KMC official, borough-wise teams on Wednesday visited three restaurants in the Park Street-Camac Street area, and several other restaurants in New Alipore, Sarat Bose Road, and the Rashbehari Avenue-Gariahat Road belt. According to a source, while a few restaurants were found nearing completion of the fire-safety upgrade, others need to expedite their work to ensure hassle-free functioning during the year-end festivities.

"Those who tried to upgrade the fire-safety measures, and can wrap up the work in the near future, are being appreciated, the others have been warned," said a KMC official.

The official said a report will be prepared by the year end and sent to the task force.
