Tourists throng Darj cafe even as Glenary’s, excise exchange blows

Darjeeling: The war of words between Glenary's Bakery and Cafe and the Bengal excise department escalated on Wednesday, as the iconic Darjeeling landmark — established in 1885 — shut down its bar and singing section for 90 days. While Glenary's maintained that all its documents are in order; the excise department said the establishment had failed to submit its licence renewal papers. The restaurant section, however, remained open on Wednesday.
This is the first time Glenary's has faced such action. A Glenary's official said the management had secured approval during the last financial year, but excise officials countered that the application for renewal had not been filed this year. The Glenary's official added that all paperwork had been submitted to the police, but the excise department stressed that under Rule 239 of the West Bengal Excise (Foreign Liquor) Rules, only the excise collector is authorized to process approvals and renewals.
Despite the shutdown of the entertainment sections, tourists continued visiting the cafe, saying that Glenary's retains its charm. Many expressed disappointment at the temporary closure but said they would return once the restrictions are lifted, calling Glenary's a "must-visit" spot.
